4-Winter

Spooky!

Not much tricking or treating here tonight, but we got a visit from these spooky charachters, and found it wisest to treat them with something sweet. It worked! “Knask eller knep” is the equivalent to the English “Trick or Treat”, only that the words have been switched around. Knask=Treat and Knep=Trick…

Hoping for that spectacular night

One of the great joys of photography, is to flip through old shots and rediscovering details you didn’t see the first time. This shot was taken on the January 23. 2012. Tonight there is a clear and rather crisp sky (although I had been hoping for a little less humidity in the atmosphere) – so – who knows – maybe it is going to be one of those spectacular nights again..?

Old (Gamle) Skagen – Revisited

I captured this magnificent photo in february by the Old Skagen (Gl. Skagen) Beach, Denmark. Erosion of the sandy dunes is a big problem. Most places the shifting sand has been stopped by planting gras. But it is a formidable force they’re up against out there on the north-western tip og Denmark. Although it is a practical problem for people wanting to live there – the erosion have a beauty of it’s own. Well captured in this photo.

It never ceases to amaze me

The Sky in Northern-Norway never ceases to amaze me. The snow, sea and ever shifting weather reveals the most fantastic light shows sometimes. This evening was no exception.

Flashing Auroras

Coming home from a late night meeting last night, I found the skies ablaze. And I was in a hurry with more pressing matters (hmm, is there any good reason not to look at auroras..?) So in a hurry I set up my tripod and camera. Unfortunately the tripod was a little wobbly in the snow and quite a few photos was a bit blurry, but a few turned out alright.

Beautiful Painted Sky

I just shot this photo of the evening sky above Narvik. Pastels all around with the mountains running like a white jagged edge throuh the landscape.

Update March 18. 1200 zulu time – My Heart goes out

On a weather worn flagpost the State and War flag of Norway is flying at half mast.

His Majesty the King of Norway, fellow officers and the chaplain has just finished the memorial service at the Evenes Air Force Base, commemorating the loss of five fellow officers.

My heart goes out to the families of the loved and lost crew. I also send my thoughts to all the personnel that have risked, and still are risking their lives in order to bring home the lost crew from an altitude of 2 kilometers. They have defied hurricane winds, snow, visibility of – sometimes just a few meters – dodging the avalanches that has come down the mountains, as they battled for days to rescue the lost crew.

Now – unfortunately – all hope is lost…

Update March 17 – 1645 zulu time – thousands of pieces of downed Hercules scattered over large area

Unfortunately it looks like there is no hope of finding the crew of five from the transport plane “Siv” that went missing the other day.

Thousands of pieces of the aircraft has been found on the mountain Kebnekaise at an altitude of around 2,000 meters. The transport plane was en route from Evenes, Norway to Kiruna, Sweden to pick up, and transport military personnel back to Norway. This tragedy could have been much bigger, but that is probably not any consolation for the ones left behind from the crew of five…
